Restaurant Lorena's Reviewed as one of The 25 Best Restaurants 2009 and "Most Romantic"

Take one stove with six burners, and nine tables that seat 32. Add two lovers with a passion for modern French cuisine, and you get the 4-year-old love child of chef Humberto Campos Jr., and manager Lorena Perez Campos. His elegant, seasonal food has made most of his customers regulars. Summer offerings include a crepe encasing jumbo lump crabmeat and field mushrooms; black angus hanger steak au poivre with braised onions and potato puree; and skate wing enlivened with fennel, black olives, capers, and lobster-shellfish broth.

Small Is Beautiful

By DAVID CORCORAN of the New York Times, February 26, 2006

The name of this five-month-old restaurant really ought to be Tough Act to Follow. It is called Lorena's, but food and wine enthusiasts will remember it as Jocelyne's -- the sweet, tiny, comforting jewel box of a place that held down its little corner of downtown Maplewood (and their hearts) from 1998 until it abruptly closed last year.

Restaurant Review: A Timeless Classic at Lorena's in Maplewood

"Let me explain about the bread," says Adrian, our server. Nothing spectacularly unusual was hiding in the basket -- a sourdough roll, a small olive loaf -- but Adrian described them carefully, noting as well that the pat of butter came sprinkled with hand-harvested sea salt from the Brittany Coast of France. Zagat Review

Close to "perfect", this "spectacular" Maplewood BYO overseen by chef Humberto Campos Jr. offers "sublime" cuisine with such "superb attention to detail" that it's rated NJ's Top French restaurant; granted, it's "unaffordable on a regular basis" and the ultra-"compact" setting means "you'll need to reserve weeks in advance", but given the "flawless" service and "super-romantic" mood, many say it "doesn't get any better" than this.
